Beresford Williams, the acting president of Cricket South Africa (CSA), along with five other board members have resigned from their respective posts, said CSA in a statement on Sunday (October 25).

President of the Northerns Cricket Union Tebogo Siko, president of Boland Cricket Union Angelo Carolissen, deputy president of Limpopo Impala Cricket John Mogodi and president of the Eastern Province Cricket Union Donovan May have submitted their resignation from the board. Independent director and board member  Dheven Dharmalingam also resigned from his post.

The members' council appointed Rihan Richards, president of Northern Cape Cricket, as the new acting president for the council. They had earlier met on October 22 to discuss the cricketing matters and the things concerning the organisation. Members' council is the highest decision making authority where all 14 provinces have their representation.

“Cricket South Africa would like to inform you of the resignations of its Acting President, Mr Beresford Williams; Mr Tebogo Siko, President of the Northerns Cricket Union; Mr Angelo Carolissen, President of Boland Cricket Union; Mr John Mogodi, Deputy President of Limpopo Impala Cricket; and Mr Donovan May, President of the Eastern Province Cricket Union. The resignations were handed in at the meeting of the Members’ Council held on Sunday, 25 October 2020,” said Richards.

“Acting president of CSA Beresford Williams has handed in his resignation with immediate effect. Mr Williams said that he is deeply passionate about cricket and because of his love for the game, he has resigned as this is the best way, he can currently serve cricket,” tweeted CSA.

“I commit to working with the Board, Members' Council & management, should they have a need. Notwithstanding the difficult times, it was a pleasure working with everyone. I wish & hope that CSA finds peace in the coming months & cricket takes centre stage," Dharmalingam was quoted as saying by CSA official handle on twitter.

Williams was appointed as the acting president of CSA on August 18 post the departures of former President Chris Nenzani and acting CEO Dr. Jacques Faul. He has resigned from the board as well as the members’ council; other resigned board members will continue to remain in the members’ council.

“CSA thanks them for their dedication, commitment and service to CSA and wishes them well in their future endeavours," Richards  concluded.

Earlier in October, South Africa’s sports minister Nathi Mthethwa gave notice to the International Cricket Council that he intends to intervene in the running of CSA unless they stabilize the governance. The ministry has given CSA an ultimatum till October 27 to respond to the decision with a written presentation if the board wishes to make a case for themselves.
