The WHITE FERNS squad was announced for the One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) series against the West Indies. The tour includes three ODIs and five T20s, and the series will be played from 4th to 25th March in New Zealand.

The three ODIs will be played in Christchurch as part of the ICC women’s championship, before a five-game Twenty20 International series in the North Island.

18-year-old left-arm seam bowler Kate Heffernan of Otago Sparks and 22-year-old batter Lauren Down of Auckland Hearts got their maiden call-up in the 13-player T20I squad and ODI squad respectively.

WHITE FERNS coach Haidee Tiffen was impressed with these two young talents, and said, “Both Kate and Lauren are impressive athletes in their own right and will definitely bring that dynamic edge that we’re looking for.”

“The fact that Kate is a left-armer was certainly a factor in her selection as she will bring that point of difference. We see an immense amount of potential in Kate, particularly as we look ahead a bit further to a World Cup in New Zealand in 2021.” He added, “Lauren’s been on our radar for a while in both formats and we also think she’s one for the future. She’s explosive with the bat and is a terrific fielder across the park.”

Kate Ebrahim, the all-rounder of Canterbury Magicians, has returned to the ODI squad, while Northern Spirit’s T20 leading run-scorer Natalie Dodd and pace-bowler Haley Jensen also returned to the T20 squad after her successful season with Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League.

Experienced batter of Auckland Hearts, Katie Perkins, will miss the series after having a thumb injury; while Erin Bermingham, the leg-spinner of Canterbury Magicians was unavailable for selection after taking an indefinite break from international cricket.

The 13-member squad will be led by Suzie Bates and Amy Satterthwaite will continue to be her deputy in both the ODI and T20 series.
