The Western Province women’s coach Cobus Roodt has died after suffering from a heart attack while on his way to the South African emerging squad camp in Pretoria on Monday, the Western Province Cricket Board (WPCB) confirmed.
The passing of Roodt happened a day after he led his Western Province Women’s team to the Cricket South Africa Women’s league title win over Gauteng Women’s in Bloemfontein at St. Andrews on Sunday.
According to the WPCB, the legendary Roodt was a beloved coach whose players often said that they perform for him. He won 16 trophies from a possible 18 while coaching Western Province in the past six years.
WPA and WPCA expressed its shock on the sudden death of Roodt
President of the Western Province Association (WPA), Beresford Williams said that Roodt was known as a passionate, energetic and inspirational coach, his loss will leave a huge hole in our cricket, but his legacy will live on forever.
"For us, his passing is an enormous loss and as a family at Western Province, our prayers and thoughts are with the Roodt family and friends as well as the players who so passionately performed with him at the helm," said Nabeal Dien, the chief executive officer of the WPCA.
