Australia clinched away a five-run thriller against New Zealand in the opening match of the Rose Bowl series. Jess Jonassen made an imprinting upturn to the Aussie’s with a batting cameo in the lower order and a 4 wicket haul in the death overs. New Zealand couldn’t hold their nerves in the end despite Amy Satterthwaite’s 92.

“Pretty ruled, but we have to put it in perspective that we have two games of cricket left a good opportunity I think to come back. We showed a lot of fight, we took it to them in the first game,” said Satterthwaite, the White Ferns Captain.

“We have been playing good cricket as a side even before the start of the series. We look to building upon what we did today and take positives,” she added.

New Zealand needed 22 off 2 overs before Satterthwaite lost her wicket to Jonassen. After which the game turned and Australia pulled off a nail-biter.

Satterthwaite said, “We had an opportunity to win that game. We didn't but we have got to look at the positives and keep building on them. We did build partnerships after losing an early wicket."

On the other side the player of the match, Jonassen said, “Any Rose bowl series win or match win is good to start the series with a win is nice and especially for ICC championship points also for the grabs, it’s a good start to the series."

“I want to take a few wickets and get a few runs and ultimately to win for our team. My main goal going into today was to enjoy every moment and that was reflected in the performance in the end," said Jonassen, reflecting back on her today’s performance.

“To have the first one under your belt is quite nice but we know they are going to come out just as hard if not harder. We really have to be on our A game," she added on the win.

Jonassen made a comeback to the side after missing the series against Pakistan due to injury. She also warmed the bench during T20 World cup 2018.

“Obviously, the team was doing well and it was difficult to break back on the side. I still had one of the best seats in the house to see the girls do that thing over there and be a part of that. I just glad to be back on the field and be a part of that,” said Jonassen.

Australia will play New Zealand on Sunday (February 24) at the Karen Rolton Oval.

“Karen Rolton Oval is a pretty decent batting wicket, it can be an entertaining match hope we come out on the top again,” concluded Jonassen.
