Three female umpires from Sri Lanka Cricket received promotions to higher grades in a ceremony conducted at the board's headquarters in Maitland Place. The trio of Dedunu de Silva, Nimali Perera and Sanduni Abeywickrema, three of the country's most promising female umpires, made great strides in the field over the last year.

De Silva, a former international batter who featured in as many as 48 internationals for Sri Lanka, was promoted to Level 3, along with her Sri Lanka A teammate, Perera. Meanwhile, Abeywickrema, another former international, has been promoted to the Level 4 panel of umpires.

Of the three, de Silva is the most experienced, having officiated in last year's Women's Emerging Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. She stood alongside several senior umpires from the sub-continent, including Shozab Raza (Pakistan), Morshed Ali Khan (Bangladesh), and Sri Lanka’s Rohitha Kottahachchi and Asanga Jayasuriya. She also shared the field with India's Janani Narayanan who was recently inducted into the International Panel of ICC development umpires.

Through the course of the ceremony, as many as 133 umpires accredited by SLC received their promotion letters. The promotions were handed out after the board conducted examinations, interviews, and a viva - results of which were scrutinised by the Umpires Committee.

A total of 370 SLC accredited umpires took these exams and only 133 - four in Level 1, 10 in Level 2, 29 in Level 3 and 90 in Level 4 - received promotions.
