The Momentum Proteas continued where they left off in the ODI series as they beat Bangladesh by 17 runs to go 1-0 up in the 3-match T20 series at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley. Supreme bowler Shabnim Ismail 3/19 stared with the ball as the Proteas managed to defend a target of 128.
Batting for the first time as an opening pair in a T20 international, Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolvaardt raced to 77 after 9.3 overs before Wolvaardt was stumped by Shamima Sultana of the bowling of Rumana Ahmed to end the Proteas’ highest T20I partnership against Bangladesh. Lee and Wolvarrdt have now crossed 50+ runs batting together for the fifth time over the course of the ODI and T20 series against the Tigers.
As it was proving to be a good decision taken by Chloe Tryon to bat first, the Tigers pulled it back nicely when they took four wickets for just 8 runs with the debutant Stacey Lackay bowled out by Khadija Tul Kubra for 1(5) to leave the Proteas on 85/4 after 12.2 overs. Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp tried to repair the damage but Salma Khatun removed Kapp for 11(16). The Proteas stepped up a gear, scoring 12 overs in the final over with Luus scoring a crucial 28 not out of 23 balls to make the Proteas score respectable.
The hosts finished on 127/6, which is their highest T20I total against Bangladesh. Lee was the top scorer with 46 and Kubra was the pick of the bowlers finishing with figures of 3/23 supported by Rumana Ahmed 2/19.

Up against a strong Proteas side with players competing in the Big Bash and Kia Super League Rumana Ahmed and Fargana Hoque steadied the ship hitting 13 runs in the 14th over to keep the Tigers on the hunt. At 72/2 the tourists were in control needing 52 of 36 to beat the Proteas and pass their highest T20I total of 117. Ismail returned to give the hosts the much-needed breakthrough. She had Ahmed caught by du Preez at mid-wicket for 36(41) to end Bangladesh’s third highest T20I partnership of 72
The wheels came off for the visitors when Masabata Klaas got the important wicket of Hoque 35 (37) to leave the visitors needing 33 from 13 balls. Tight overs from Kapp and Ismail ensured that Tigers did not get over the line as they only managed 110-5 in 20 overs which is their highest T20I total outside Asia.
The next match will take place tomorrow, 19 May at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein. Play starts at 13:00.
