Team History

India has always been the ‘nearly’ side of women’s cricket. They reached the finals of the Women’s World Cup twice, in 2005 and 2017, but were unable to win either. Despite the loss though, the second of these campaigns saw the Women in Blue receive massive media coverage and goodwill from fans and critics alike.

The 1970s was the breakthrough decade for India, with them making their test debut in 1976 against West Indies, and then making their ODI debut 2 years later, at the World Cup.

Looking at India’s T20 record, they started off exceptionally, by being crowned runners-up during the first two World T20s, but have since failed to get past the group stages due to a string of lacklustre performances.

With the first signs of a women’s IPL on the horizon, the future looks like it will be an exciting one for the Women in Blue.
