T20 World Cup Qualifier, Day 3 - One spot, many contenders

New Update
Day 1 of the Qualifier - Business as usual or party-poopers' day?
Officially, the third day of the tournament will yet again see all the teams in action, with three of the four semi-final spots sealed. Thailand, Ireland and Bangladesh - with two wins each - have sealed their spots in the next round of the tournament. The final round of league games will see a fourth team join them.

Ireland v Thailand in Dundee

The Group B leaders face each other at Forthill in Dundee to start the day. Both have rocketed their way into the semi-finals by handsomely defeating Netherlands and Namibia respectively.

Thailand, who are currently ahead of the Irish side by virtue of the net run rate (NRR), will look to assert their dominance in these qualifying stages. Thailand will once again look towards Chanida Sutthiruang for consistent breakthroughs against the Ireland batting unit. She has dominated the tournament taking six wickets with some big booming inswingers, at an economy rate of two.

A lot will depend on the Ireland captain, Laura Delany, and her allround abilities for Ireland to get a positive result. The match that decides who will top the group, promises to be a cracker.

Netherlands v Namibia in Arbroath

Nobody likes to be last in the group. Unfortunately for Netherlands and Namibia, one who loses this game will slip to the bottom. The game will be played at Lochlands in Arbroath to decide the third best team of Group B. Both came into these qualifiers with no realistic ambitions of cracking the top two and would like to end the group stage by putting on a good show for their respective fans.

While not much was expected from Namibia, Netherlands' batting failures wouldn't stand them in good stead. They will look to rectify the same against an unfancied team.

Scotland v Bangladesh in Dundee

The two favourites to progress into the semi-finals face each other in what could well be a knockout game. The hosts Scotland were shocked by Papua New Guinea in their last game. That result has completely changed the dynamics of Group A.

It is a must-win game for the hosts against a competitive Bangladesh team. A lot will once again rest on the shoulders of the Bryce sisters - Kathryn and Sarah. The captain Kathryn Bryce will look at the batters yet again to post a decent total. Bangladesh's batting isn't their strongest suit as evidenced from their match against PNG.

Papua New Guinea v United States in Arbroath

The last game played in Group A has the potential to be one of the most important ones for PNG. After securing their famous win against Scotland, they came close to upstaging Bangladesh in a rain-affected fixture but it wasn't to be.

For the United States it has been a tough couple of games. However, due to the mischief of PNG, even they stand a chance, even if only mathematically, of taking the fourth spot that is still vacant.
