ACT Meteors wicketkeeper batter Matilda Lugg will be joining Sydney Sixers ahead of the seventh edition of the Women's Big Bash League.

Speaking about the signing, Lugg said that she is thrilled to join the Sixers and that it allows her to work alongside her idol and Australian opener, Alyssa Healy. “When I started playing cricket, I was a lot younger, (Healy) was an idol of mine. She still is, so being in the same squad as her and learning from the best is such an awesome opportunity.”

The Meteors wicketkeeper was shocked to receive an offer from Sixers List Manager Lisa Sthalekar to play for them. “She basically said we need a backup keeper. She asked me what my thoughts were on playing for the Sixers. Obviously, my thoughts were very positive. I am beside myself a little bit. I am really excited,” Lugg added.

Sthalekar said that the 21-year-old was over the moon to learn from Healy in the Sixers camp, adding, "The addition of Lugg also gives the squad some depth in the keeping ranks."

“It is important to give Alyssa a bit of relief so that she doesn’t have to push through sometimes if she cops one on the finger (or something like that). We have Tilly there as the backup. She is an up-and-coming, young prospect."

Lugg will be joining her Meteors skipper Angela Reakes in the Sixers camp for the upcoming season of WBBL. She said that the four-year wait has finally come to an end. “I have been trying to chip away and eventually find my way into a team for the last few years.”

“When WBBL starts in October and November, most of my ACT squad go off to Big Bash, so the last two years, it’s been me and a couple of others back (in Canberra) training, but this year, I get to go away as well, and experience that, meet new people.”
