Stars shine as they beat battling Scorchers

With the semi-final fixtures already decided, this final round-robin fixture between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers presented a perfect opportunity for the Sixers to test their batting depth. Sydney Sixers won the toss at the MCG and elected to bat first.

Healy and Perry started the inning confidently by putting 41 in 4 overs. Perry played a watchful inning but was trapped leg before by Hancock for 6(11). Healy 35(21) fell in the next over as she tried to clear the deep midwicket boundary off King.

Sixers’ reliance on the top 3 batters was exploited superbly by Stars’ bowling unit and the untested middle order was sent back to the pavilion in no time. In a superb spell, Alana King also removed Burns and McGlashan who were stumped by Faltum the span of 2 overs. Hancock claimed her second wicked as Gardner was clean bowled, leaving the Sixers 62/5.

Wickets in the regular interval by Beams, Osborne and Ferling ensured there was no further resistance by the Sixers lower order and were bowled out for 92 in 19 overs.

Chasing 92 for victory, the Stars were dealt a blow on the second delivery when Lee edge Kapp’s delivery to Healy. du Preez joined Reakes at the crease but van Niekerk sent her packing in her first over and the Stars were 19/2 at the end of the fourth over. Reakes steadily added to the Stars’ total but Kapp dismissed her in the seventh over for 22(23). Martin and Osborne steadied the inning by adding 30 before Silver-Holmes caught Martin off Cheatle for 15(21).

Osborne and Sutherland ensured that the no further setbacks as they added 28 but just as the Stars were reaching the target Sutherland was caught by Aley for 14(16). King completed the formality as Stars won the match by 5 wickets. Osborne remained undefeated on 34(29).

Alana King was declared player of the match for her superb spell of 3-13.

Sixers finished their WBBL04 campaign with 11 points as Sixers topped the table with 20 points.

On Saturday the Sydney Sixers will take on Melbourne Renegades in the first semi-final as Sydney Thunder will meet Brisbane Heat.
