Perth Scorchers skipper Sophie Devine said that despite the slow start, she is pleased with the momentum the side have gained in the middle phase of the sixth edition of the Women's Big Bash League. Speaking after their nine-wicket win over Melbourne Renegades, Devine said that they have managed to find a way to get the best out of the players.

"I think we obviously took too much time coming together as a side. But we are starting to hit our strides now - two good wins against the (Sydney) Sixers and a really clinical finish against the Renegades," Devine told the reporters on Saturday (November 14).

Scorchers registered their third consecutive victory in the competition, and are currently placed third in the points table. When asked whether they had an eye on the Net Run Rate while chasing against the Renegades, Devine was quick to dismiss the suggestion, saying that they are focused on just winning games and see what happens as the tournament progresses.

The Kiwi allrounder was all praise for Taneale Peschel, the fast bowler, who picked up two wickets giving away just 17 runs in her four overs. "To see her have the success, I think she really deserves her place because she has worked so hard behind the scenes," she said.

"It's nice to see her stand out in pressure situations as well. Just shows the quality of the bowlers when you bowl them under pressure - in the powerplay, at the death when the teams are coming. And still, to be able to stand out and take wickets, I think it's full credit to Pesch. She worked really hard and getting the rewards now."

Devine also applauded Scorchers' No.3 Chloe Piparo for her performance against the Renegades. She said that the right-hander was brilliant at the top of the order, adding, "she did a great job, backed her strengths and took the game head on which is certainly what we ask for as a team. You back yourself in and get on the front foot."

On the return of the England star Amy Jones, Devine said that although it might take some time for her to make it to the playing XI, the prospect of having her back at a time when the side are in a strong position, is something they are excited about.

"I think it's another exciting prospect for our team as to think we still have got Amy Jones to come into the side. We really think we are in a really good position at the moment without one of the best batters in the world Amy Jones, you know, I think we are on a good spot."

Scorchers will face Sydney Thunder in their next game. Devine said that they were disappointed after their loss to Thunder in their previous encounter. "I thought we were poised really nicely in the run-chase, and I think just we probably let the game get big on ourselves," she said.

However, she remained confident about turning the result around in the upcoming fixture. Devine said that it would test their squad strength, especially with the momentum they have gained with back-to-back wins.

"I think it's a really important phase in the competition with plenty of games happening in not too many days. I think we are going on a bit of roll to maintain, starting every match from scratch making sure we got to do our job as well as we can," she concluded.
