Former India skipper Shantha Rangaswamy will be conferred the Lifetime Achievement award for 2019 by the Karnataka state government on November 2 for her contribution to Indian and Karnataka women's cricket.



Rangaswamy, a woman of many firsts, was India's first Test captain, first Test centurion and also hit the country's first six in international cricket. In an international career spanning 15 years, Rangaswamy played a total of 16 Tests - captaining the side in as many as 12 - and 19 ODIs. She was at the helm of India's first Test and ODI wins, and only twice tasted defeat as skipper of the Test teams.



She amassed over 1000 runs and took 33 wickets through her career, in which she finished as the side's second highest run-getter in the longest format.

Following her retirement in 1991, the allrounder spent a few years commentating on the game for Doordarshan and All India Radio. She then served as coach of the Indian team for a brief while, before being appointed selector. She served as the chair of the selection committee, overseeing a period of great success for the Indian team that culminated in their terrific run in the ODI World Cup in 2017.



In 2017, she became the first woman to recieve BCCI's Lifetime Achievemene Award. She continues to play an influential role in Indian cricket and is currently a member of the board's apex council - the female representative of the Indian Cricketers' Association.
