Canterbury Magicians and Auckland Hearts will contest the final of the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield after the latter beat the former in their final league match on Sunday (March 14).

At Eden Park, Saachi Shahri and captain Lauren Down hit fifties and added 117 together for the opening wicket, after opting to bat first. Down took 111 balls for her knock while Shahri faced 83. Amy Satterthwaite got the breakthrough for the Magicians, getting rid of Shahri.

Frances Mackay soon got into the party and what followed was a batting collapse. Hearts were bowled out for 216, with Mackay returning five for 40.

In reply, Magicians lost Kate Ebrahim early, but they stayed afloat thanks to a 42-run innings off 73 balls by Mackay first, followed by an excellent 96 by Satterthwaite. However a flurry of wickets in the middle left them in strife.

What then followed was a 67-run partnership between Satterthwaite and Laura Hughes (23). But the duo fell in the last over as the Magicians fell short by ten runs.

Meanwhile, at the Basin Reserve, Wellington Blaze continued their dominance, despite being out of contention of a spot in the finals, downing Otago Sparks by 175 runs.

Batting first, Blaze were off to a flier, adding 86 in 13 overs, with Sophie Devine doing the damage. The partnership was broken after Jessica McFadyen was dismissed by EJ Carson. Devine then completed her 32nd List A half century before falling for 74 off just 44 balls. But half centuries by Maddy Green (62) and Jess Kerr (58) helped Blaze to 321 for eight.

Emma Black returned three for 58 for Sparks. In response, their batting failed to be counted with only Katey Martin making a notable 64 off just 62 balls as Sparks were bundled out for 146. Kerr returned with three for nine with the ball.

Over at Pukekura Park, Central Hinds beat Northern Districts by 13 runs, thanks to Hannah Rowe’s 43 and Ashtuti Kumar’s  three for 28. Nensi Patel hit an unbeaten 53 for Northern Districts.
