Bangladesh captain Salma Khatun’s three-wicket haul went in vain as some economical spells from South Africa bowlers guide Proteas to a comfortable win in the final group match on November 19 at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, St Lucia.
On the last day of the group stages of World T20 showed some good intensity matches. Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bowl first. Lee and van Niekerk started the innings pretty well before the former fell for 21 off 13.
Marizane Kapp, the middle-order batter, and captain van Niekerk added few runs for the third wicket before the former got dismissed by Rumana Ahmed’s bowling by giving a catch to Pinky at deep-midwicket after scoring 25 off 19.
Pressure fell upon the captain and other batters to resurrect the innings. After Sune Luus’ golden duck dismissal, experienced du Preez joined her captain at the crease. But they could last only till 11.2 overs. Soon captain got dismissed by Nahida Akhter for 17. Tryon’s 15-ball 18 came to an end in the 16th over. Spinners’ economical spells dismantled South Africa batters and a sudden collapse ended up South Africa’s innings within 109 after 20 overs.
Salma Khatun picked up three wickets, Kubra scalped two whereas Ahmed and Akhter bagged 1 each for Bangladesh.
Chasing a low scoring total of 110, Bangladesh lost their opener Ayasha in the 4th over, while playing across the line, she got trapped leg before by Daniels. They managed to put up only 13 runs in the powerplay. Soon Sharmin Akhter got bowled by Luus for 8 off 22. No batters were able to settle down at the crease before the fiery spell of South Africa bowlers and they got reduced to 33/3 after 10 overs.
Continuous dot-balls kept the run-rate high which the batters were unable to cover. Rumana Ahmed and Fargana Hoque tried their best to score big but no other batters were there to support them. Hoque scored 19 off 36 and Ahmed top-scored 34* off 40 were the only batters to reach double figures.
Some economical spell from South Africa bowlers restricted Bangladesh within 79/5 and they won the match comfortably.
