Perry's maiden ton crushes New Zealand to clinch Rose Bowl series

Ellyse Perry’s maiden ODI century and Jess Jonassen’s 5-wicket haul helped Australia crush New Zealand by 95 runs to clinch the Rose Bowl series with a game to spare.

Adelaide’s Karen Rolton Oval hosted its first International game as the hosts Australia took on New Zealand in the second match of the Rose Bowl series.

The skipper Amy Satterthwaite won the toss for New Zealand and elected to field. Both the teams made changes to their line ups from the previous game. The Southern Stars gave Delissa Kimmince her first ODI match since August 2014 as she replaced Lauren Cheatle. The White Ferns brought in Anna Peterson in for Leigh Kasperek.

Haynes and Healy watchfully played out first two overs before Healy smashed two boundaries in Tahuhu’s over. Rosemary Mair was the unlucky bowler when Jensen dropped a simple catch of Healy at 15. Healy didn’t waste any time making most of the lifeline by scoring two more boundaries in the same over as she completed 1000 runs in her ODI career.

In the 11^th over Devine struck first for the visitors as Haynes was caught by Bates for 16. In the next over, Jensen caused mini panic in the Australia camp as the skipper Lanning departed for only 3 and the hosts found themselves at 50-2. Perry joined Healy at the crease and adopted the safety-first approach as the next 7 overs saw only 13 runs being scored. The shackles came off in the 19^th over when Healy scored two consecutive boundaries.

Healy seemed cruising to a well-deserved half century but she failed to read Peterson’s delivery and was bowled for 46 (75). At 85-3, Mooney arrived at the crease and started rotating the strike with Perry. In the 31^st over Perry registered first six at the new venue as she hooked Devine beyond square-leg boundary. The pair swiftly posted a 50-run partnership in 69 deliveries. In the 36^th over Perry completed her 26^th ODI fifty which took 76 deliveries and saw three fours and a six.

Kerr broke the 98-run partnership by sending Mooney back to the pavilion for 42 (52) and two balls later trapped Villani plumb leg before wicket for a duck. Next up was Gardener who was bowled off the first ball for a golden duck. Kerr’s over caused a mayhem as the hosts suddenly slipped down from 183-3 to 183-6 in the space of four deliveries. Perry successfully fended off the hat-trick delivery and soon brought up 200 for the hosts in 45^th over.

Jonassen with Perry added 44 runs for the 7^th wicket but fell to Peterson for 16 (19). Perry brought up her maiden century on the penultimate delivery and smashed the next one into the stands to close Australia’s innings at 247-7 in 50 overs. She remained unbeaten on 107 (110b 8x4, 1x6).

Chasing 248 to win, the White Ferns’ openers Bates and Devine started cautiously. Perry struck in 6^th over as she dismissed Bates for 11. Down joined Devine at 17-1 but departed in the 9^th over for 4 when Schutt trapped her LBW to restrict the guests at 26-2.

Amy Satterthwaite started her inning by sending the first delivery to the boundary. The White Ferns posted 50 in the 13^th over. Devine and Satterthwaite stepped up the gear and brought up their 50-run partnership in 50 deliveries. At the end of the 20^th over, the pair had eased the early nerves and looked confident as the score reached 90-2.

Three runs later, the player of the match from the previous game, Jonassen, broke the 67 run partnership when Devine was trapped leg before wicket for 47 (59). Martin joined Satterthwaite who was batting at 28. The guests’ 100 came in the 23^rd over with 148 more runs to win in 27 overs. Wareham struck in the same over to dismiss Martin for 5.

New Zealand batters found runs to come by extremely hard. They could score only 29 runs between 20^th and 30^th over because Australian bowlers had well and truly put the brakes on their scoring. This pressure of more than 6.5 runs per over to win led to another wicket as Perkins was found plumb leg before the wicket to Jonassen. Just 4 balls later well set batter Satterthwaite was run out for 37 and the visitors slumped to 119-6.

But Jonassen struck again to claim her third wicket by dismissing Peterson and in she repeated her feat of 4 wickets in the next over when Kerr was caught by Kimmince. On the next delivery Lanning caught Tahuhu to give Jonassen her second 5-wicket haul against the same side and put her on hat-trick delivery. Mair successfully avoided the hat-trick delivery.

Playing at her home ground, Schutt brought an end to Jensen’s brief resistance to wrap up the New Zealand inning to 152. The guests slumped from 93-2 to 152 all out in the span of 17 overs.

Having clinched the 3 ODI series 2-0 with a game to spare, the both sides will meet again on 3^rd March.
