Anthony Crummy, New Zealand Cricket’s deputy chief, has resigned from his post last week as the organisation cut 15% of its staff due to COVID-19.

Crummy managed the New Zealand operations for the Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2015 before joining the NZC. He was then based in Auckland at the head office of NZC. More resignations will follow as 12 from the 80 employees in Auckland and the High Performance Centre at Lincoln have been cut from the payroll, stuff.co.nz reported.

David White, the NZC chief executive, had suggested last week that they would be saving NZ$ 6 million in operation costs, while saying that the players won’t be affected.

“People have made that connection with the timing but I’ve been thinking about what I do next for a couple of months,” said Crummy.

“I’ve been at NZC five years and loved every minute of it and focused on some pretty big projects. I finished one of those and thought it might be time, so I had that chat pre-Covid. The time is right for me.”

He was the head of strategy at the NZ Racing Board and then a couple of years with Rugby New Zealand 2011 before his cricketing stints. He was touted to be a successor to White in the future. He said that NZC will tackle the financial challenges and it is well placed to do so.

“It’s tough times and there’s going to be an impact as David has said on the record. It’s been navigated really well so far and I’m sure it will in the future.”
