The T20 World Cup win tops it all and that would be at the top of her achievements if she were to retire today, said Nicola Carey, Australia’s allrounder. Carey played nine of her 12 T20Is in 2020 after making her debut in 2018.

“If I retired right now, I don’t think there’s anything that will probably top that day,” she was quoted as saying to Siren Sport.

“When you think back to it, it’s pretty crazy. At the time, everything goes really quickly. You’re playing games, moving on, playing games, and I didn’t think about things. But now when I look back on it, it’s actually a pretty ridiculous tournament. From losing the first game, the injuries, the weather in the semi-final, all the talk about even getting to the semi-final.”

“Then to get to a final, and then three days later, the pandemic takes over and you can’t go to stadiums or anything like that. The whole story is pretty hectic when you think about it. It’s probably one of the best days I’ve ever had. And I’m not sure how that’s ever going to be topped in my career. So I’ll never get sick of talking about it. It was an unbelievable day.”

The seam-bowling allrounder picked up four wickets in the competition and turned up unbeaten in the three times she had to bat, including an unbeaten five in the final. Australia batted India out of the contest and won their fifth world title in T20Is. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 meant that the players couldn’t celebrate much.

“Once it all happens, and the team stays together for a couple of days, and as you can imagine that is pretty full on with everyone here, there and everywhere celebrating. But we haven’t actually got to get together as a team to sit back and actually reflect on it and talk about it,” said Carey, who dismissed Deepti Sharma, India’s top-scorer, in the final.

“I guess the only times I really talk about it is when I’m doing an interview!”

“But it’s like, it has sunk in, but at the same time, I can’t actually believe that it happened. That there were over 80,000 people there. It’s actually the craziest experience. I remember being on the field and there was one point where everyone turned on their lights on their phones around the whole ground, it was just really cool.”

Like most players, Carey’s journey as a cricketer began playing with boys. She also got a lot of support from her family. Her initiation into the sport was by spending time with her two elder brothers, both of whom played cricket.

“When I was younger, I played different sports like soccer and I was really into tennis, and my two older brothers both played cricket, but I never really was like, ‘I really want to play cricket as well’,” she said.

“But I used to go along to their games and watch it every now and then, I would join in and bowl at their training sessions when I was about, probably not even 10-years-old.”

Finally, she chose to give up tennis and take to cricket, perhaps a move that would have pleased Australia, who seem more than happy to have allrounders in their ranks.

“It wasn’t until I didn’t want to play tennis anymore, and then mum just suggested to go down to the local club where the boys played and that’s where I started in under 10s and then yeah, I really enjoyed it.”
