Suné Luus not to captain South Africa on Pakistan tour

Allrounder Suné Luus, who captained South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2023, will no longer continue to lead the side, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said as they announced the 15-member squad for the Pakistan tour on Friday (August 18).

The historic tour will start from September 1 and six-matches – three T20Is and three ODIs – will be played during the tour.

The release said CSA will announce the new captain before the commencement of the series. 

"On behalf of CSA and the team, I am also eager to declare my sincere appreciation to Suné Luus for her outstanding leadership and remarkable achievements during her time as interim captain. We have full confidence that she will continue to be a guiding force both on and off the field, offering valuable support to the incoming captain,” , Clinton du Preez, convenor of selectors, said.

Experienced campaigner Chloé Tryon has opted out of the tour after requesting a leave of absence and Annerie Dercksen is still recovering from a fractured finger on her right hand. Uncapped Mieke de Ridder has earned her maiden call-up to the squad with Tumi Sekhukhune is back in the side after missing out on the T20 World Cup 2023. Off spinner Nondumiso Shangase has also found a place in the team.

“This is also an opportunity for players like Mieke de Ridder to come in and cover the area of wicket-keeper on the back of a great season provincially and also through the winter at the CSA National Academy. Nondumiso is also returning on the back of a good season after being out of the squad for a while and is now an option when going to the subcontinent, where the additional spinner adds balance to the squad, which is what we require,” du Preez added.



“We are looking forward to returning to competition, especially heading to Pakistan. The core of the squad has remained together post the World Cup and we have a few additions to ensure that we address certain shortcomings in the squad.

Head coach Hilton Moreeng has received an extension on his contract although it was expired on June 30 this year and he along with the support staff will oversee the remaining matches of this year till December 31.

After the Pakistan tour, South Africa will play against New Zealand and Bangladesh as well as part of the ICC Women’s Championship for the 2022-25 cycle.

All the matches will be played at the National Stadium in Karachi as day/night affairs.
