T20 World Cup: Seshnie Naidu earns maiden call-up for South Africa

Cricket South Africa announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup 2024 in the UAE in October. Laura Wolvaardt will lead the Proteas in a major tournament for the first time.

Cricket South Africa, on Tuesday (September 2), announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup 2024 in the UAE in October. Laura Wolvaardt will lead the Proteas in a major tournament for the first time, replacing Sune Luus. 

The Proteas captain will be supported by experienced players including Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Suné Luus, and Chloé Tryon. The squad also features talents like Tazmin Brits, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Tumi Sekhukhune and vice-captain Nadine de Klerk, who is expected to recover from her Achilles injury. 

Clinton du Preez, CSA Proteeas Women Convenor of Selectors, commented, ""Laura (Wolvaardt) has been exceptional as a leader, bringing a holistic approach to the team. She leads with respect and integrity, and we are excited to see her leadership and playing qualities shine at the World Cup." 

Uncapped leg-spinner Seshnie Naidu has earned her maiden national call-up after impressive performances for the U19 side. The 18-year-old will be joined by fellow youngsters Annerie Dercksen and Ayanda Hlubi. squad will also include a travelling reserve, former SA U19 Women all-rounder Miané Smit.

"Seshnie Naidu has shown significant growth as a bowler within our camps, and we see her as an X-factor for the World Cup. She brings a unique element to our bowling attack, offering something different that could be pivotal," du Preez said.

The 2023 finalists will face Pakistan in a three-match T20I series from September 16-20 in Multan before leaving for the UAE for the ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup. 

South Africa has been placed in Group B alongside Bangladesh, England, Scotland and the 2016 champions, West Indies. Their campaign will begin against West Indies on October 4 after playing two warm-up games against New Zealand and India on September 29 and October 1 respectively.
