Match Preview: Bangladesh v South Africa – Match 20

Date: November 18, 2018

Venue: Darren Sammy Stadium, St Lucia

In a dead rubber, the Proteas will face-off against Bangladesh in the last day of the group stage before the World T20 carnival reaches the knock out stage. South Africa have won only one game and Bangladesh are winless in this competition.

Things didn’t go according to plan for this year’s Asia Cup champions Bangladesh. They were expected to put up a decent show in this tournament and came to the Caribbean with high hopes. They didn’t impress much and lost all their matches which they played against Windies by 60 runs, England by 7 wickets and Sri Lanka by 25 runs.

Once again it was a disappointing campaign for the Proteas women who won their opening game against Sri Lanka by 7 wickets, but their batting didn’t click in the next two matches against the West Indies and England which they eventually lost.

Being the last game of their campaign, South Africa would want to finish it on a high note and it would be another opportunity for Bangladesh to win against a top team in a World T20 match.

Players to watch out for:

Jahanara Alam (Bangladesh)

She has been the biggest asset with the ball for Bangladesh and she took 6 wickets in 3 games so far with an astonishing economy rate under 6. She would like to see this as an opportunity to bowl against some of the biggest hitters of the cricket ball. She would definitely want to finish this tournament on high and add some more wickets to her tally.

Shabnim Ismail (South Africa)

Shabnim Ismail has been the pick of the bowlers for South Africa and has been performing consistently in every match. She would be looking once again to rattle Bangladesh's top order. Having a career economy of just over 6, with the kind of the current form she is in, she is the bowler Bangladesh should be wary of. Her extra pace has been the differentiation factor and she has used it very effectively.

Conditions:

The pitches so far have been very slow in most of the games. The slower you bowl the less it bounces. It has taken batters a while to get in but once in then, the runs become easier to score. The outfield will be quick and that means there will be value for good shots.

Numbers to look out for:

  • Mignon du Preez requires 61 runs to complete 1500 T20I runs.

  • Dane van Niekerk need 27 runs to complete 500 T20I runs in 2018.

Who said what:

“It’s never easy watching your teammates and your friends not do well but we still have another game tomorrow and we need to keep our heads up and be positive for that one.” - Sune Luus

“We had a goal that we don’t want to play any more T20 qualifiers. But we still have a chance to increase our rankings if we win against South Africa. Who knows, something can happen, cricket is an unpredictable game.” - Jahanara Alam

Probable XI:

South Africa: Laura Wolvaardt, Lizelle Lee (wk), Dane van Niekerk (c), Sune Luus, Marizanne Kapp, Chloe Tryon, Mignon du Preez, Shabnim Ismail, Masabata Klaas, Tumi Sekhukhune, Moseline Daniels
