Half-centuries by Gandhi Jafta, Chloe Tryon, Andrie Steyn and Delmari Tucker highlighted the opening day of the Cricket South Africa Provincial One-Day tournament on Saturday (October 23) as Central Gauteng Lions, North West Dragons and Northern Titans registered vcitories.

Despite Alysia Rudolph’s four-fer, Easterns faced an 85-run loss against Central Gauteng Lions at the Dlamini Oval in Johannesburg. Batting first, Central Gauteng Lions were bowled out for 187. Some late hitting by Ayabonga Khaka helped them cross the 150 mark. In reply, Easterns were all out for 102 as Yolani Fourie and Kgomotso Rapoo took three wickets each.

In the other match, at the Jaimeson Oval, Tucker (60) and Steyn (51) scored half-centuries for the Western Province as they scored 170 runs in the first innings. Northern Titans were put under pressure by three-wicket hauls from Leah Jones and Nosipho Vezi, but Gandhi Jafta’s patient knock of 81 led the Titans to a narrow victory by two wickets.

Tryon’s run-a-ball 86 went in vain as North West Dragons chased down the modest target of 147 with six wickets in hand. Batting first, KZN Coastal lost some early wickets before Tryon steadied the ship with her half-century, which included 11 fours and two sixes. Nthabiseng Nini took three wickets for Dragons and helped her side skittle Coastal for 146.

Half-centuries from openers Tazmin Britz (63) and Izel Cilliers’ (66*) were enough for the Dragons to chase down the target in the 33rd over. Nondumiso Shangase and Tryon took two wickets each for the KZN Coastal.
