Recently, Women’s CricZone interviewed England opener Tammy Beaumont, discussing ECB’s new format ‘the 100’, Beaumont’s advice to younger players and of course, the secret behind her current formidable form. Here is what she had to say:

Q: As experienced internationals, how do you try to help the younger players in the squad in the KSL?

Ans: For us, it’s really important in these kinds of environments, where we’re with the younger players to share as much information as possible. I think that’s the good thing about having the likes of Suzie Bates from New Zealand, Mignon du Preez from South Africa, that we all share ideas. I learn of Mignon, Mignon learns off me. Everyone kind of shares that communication and works together and tries to build their knowledge.

Q: Your opinion on ‘the 100.’

Ans: I think in terms of the investment into women’s cricket, it’s going to be second to none and we really need that to take this domestic tournament to the next level, make it fully professional and get it on the rest of TV so we have more people watching. I think that part of it is amazing. For me, its’ just making sure that outside that we have another T20 competition so that young girls ten years’ down the line aren’t just playing a hundred ball competition then having to play international T20, they’re actually still playing both.

Q: You’re in great form these days. What is the secret behind it?

Ans: A lot of luck! *laughs.* A lot of hard work. You know, I constantly want to improve my game. I’m always analyzing, trying to get better. I’m never satisfied. I’ll find something tomorrow that I didn’t do well enough today. I think once you’re in the position where you feel like you’re batting well, that’s when you’ve got to become really ruthless, really greedy and make sure you never give your wicket away.

Q: Is there any player you’re surprised to not see in the KSL?

Ans: Not really, I mean I’d love to see someone like Sana Mir play. People not from the big four teams, getting over. I think it’s brilliant that Chamari Attaptthu is involved and this year we’ve got Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana. A few girls from Ireland or Bangladesh in the future would also be amazing.

Q: What would your advice be to young girls looking to pursue a career in cricket?

Ans: The big one for me is be prepared to make loads of mistakes but just make sure you learn from them. I see a lot with young girls, they’re afraid to put themselves out there maybe look silly, maybe bowl one into the net, maybe get hit doing the scoop shot *gestures how a scoop shot can hit the shoulder.*. Be prepared to make that mistake, look at why it happened and always try to get better
