Lizelle Lee shoots Stars to the summit in a thrilling final display

Lizelle Lee set the scoreboard racing her with the first-ever Kia Super League Final hundred to win by 66 runs. Having lost the toss Surrey Stars were put in by Loughborough Lightning. It was an innings where she rode her luck on more than one occasion and fell over playing two shots.

She was dropped on 31 off the bowling of Kirstie Gordon. Five balls later she was on fifty. It was again that Lee was dropped off the bowling of Gordon again. This time it was Adams on the boundary who couldn’t stop her momentum and the only outcome was a six.

It was in truth the worst fielding performance by Loughborough Lightning. In the face of Lee at her destructive, most teams can’t keep up. Nat Sciver was happy to play the supporting role and her score of 40 was just crucial in ensuring that Surrey Stars posted the second highest score of this year's competition.

Kirstie Gordon finally got the wicket of Lee. This time she was caught safely by Racheal Haynes. By that time Lee had 104. It ensured that Gordon would finish as the leading wicket-taker.

Wickets tumbled towards the end of the innings but it was too late for Loughborough Lightning as Surrey posted 183 for 6.

An injury to Sophie Devine didn’t help and when she fell for 5 and followed the over after by Amy Jones, Loughborough Lightning had lost two of their most important batters.

Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp made sure that the South African influence continued as they returned figures of 3 for 22 and 2 for 12 respectively. It is a testament to the way that momentum works in T20 cricket as Surrey Stars did not have the best of starts and ironically might have been out of the running had the number of group games been extended.

Surrey Stars thoroughly deserved to win the competition as they constantly won the crucial moments in games for the last couple of weeks and it showed in a confident manner they went about their cricket.

Next season is set to be the last Kia Super League and on today's showing that will be a shame as a crowd of 3800 enjoyed an entertaining day's cricket.
