India’s veteran speedster Jhulan Goswami, crossed one more milestone in her career by becoming the first female cricketer to take 200 ODI wickets, earlier today. Jhulan achieved the mark during the second encounter of the three-match ODI series between India and South Africa, which India won by a huge margin of 178 runs. The 35-year-old Chakdaha express, playing her 166th ODI, dismissed opener Laura Wolvaardt for her 200th scalp. Wolvaardt edged Goswami’ s delivery in the fifth over, to Wicket-keeper Sushma Verma, who took the catch to help Jhulan get her milestone. This ODI match seems to be a record-breaking encounter for the entire Indian team; with Smriti Mandhana making her highest ODI score of 135, Jhulan achieving her 200th scalp, and Harmanpreet Kaur’ s 150th International match.

Hailing from a small town called Chakdaha in the Nadia district of West Bengal, Goswami made her debut way back in 2002. She has represented India in 10 tests, 166 ODI’ s and 60 T20 matches. Till now she has bagged 290 wickets in all forms of the game. In May 2017, Goswami became the highest wicket-taker in Women’s ODI’ s, eclipsing the long record held by Australia’s Cathryn Fitzpatrick (180 wickets) and Lisa Sthalekar (146 wickets). Her best figure has been 6/31 against New Zealand in 2011, and she was also named as ICC Women Cricketer of the year in 2007.

Goswami is also the faster female bowler ever. Consistently serving for sixteen years shows the dedication and hard work she has put in to achieve this milestone. Not just bowling, but her ability to play crucial knocks down the order has led her to become a great all-rounder for Indian Cricket.

Incidentally, her fellow teammate Mithali Raj is the leading run scorer in one-day cricket and has smashed 6255 runs in 188 matches. Both of them have had exceptional careers for India, and will forever be remembered as legends of the game.
