Cricket Ireland, on Wednesday (July 3), announced an amended schedule for the Ireland women’s team following the last-minute cancellation of their series against Zimbabwe.

Ireland was due to play a six-match series at home against Zimbabwe in the first week of July. However, last Friday (June 30) Zimbabwe Cricket pulled the team out of the tour citing funding and logistical issues. Both teams were meant to use the T20 part of the series as vital preparation for the upcoming ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifier in Scotland.

“This is a very unfortunate situation and we are highly conscious that the women’s squad were using the Zimbabwe series as an important lead-in to the Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier in August,” Richard Holdsworth, performance director at CI said. “With pretty much no notice we approached a number of teams to see whether they could support us with some replacement fixtures for the squad, but it proved too difficult for most sides.”

While all the scheduled fixtures had to be cancelled, CI has scheduled two T20 matches and new training sessions at Oak Hill Cricket Club over the next week. Ireland will play two matches against Leinster Under-16 Boys on Friday (July 5).

The matches and training camp will provide Ed Joyce, interim head coach of Ireland, with his first opportunity to work with the team ahead of the global Qualifiers next month.
