Hurricanes run out of luck as Thunder's Haynes strikes

They say that catches win matches but Sydney Thunder today proved that run outs are just as effective. Hobart Hurricanes were partly responsible for their own downfall as they lost their last five wickets for just 8 runs.

The Thunder won by six wickets. Racheal Haynes scored an authoritative fifty to guide the Thunder home with 20 balls to spare.

Smriti Mandhana looked in destructive mood; in the powerplay scoring 5 fours and a six before dragging on against the bowling of Nicola Carey.

Stefanie Daffara was looking good with 26 from 21 balls, however, playing across the line to Maisy Gibson was trapped lbw. At the other end, Heather Knight was rotating the strike as she watched wickets fall at the other end.

It wasn’t until Knight’s twenty-seventh ball that she found the boundary. Knight looked to be going through the gears depositing Carey for six.

While things weren’t going to plan as they lost 5 wickets in 15 balls. Georgia Redmayne was run out after being sent back by Knight. Knight herself was run out three balls later. The Hurricanes were unable to complete their allotted overs as they were bowled out for 135 from 19.4 overs.

With the average first innings score in WBBL|04 over 150 it was always going to be difficult for the Hurricanes to stay in the game for long. Rachel Priest and Racheal Haynes set about proving that correct.

Priest deposited Sasha Moloney for four from the first three balls of the innings and then added another from the last ball of the over. Haynes at the other end was finding the boundary with regular efficiency.

At the end of the powerplay, the Thunder were 1 for 63. Priest was the only wicket to fall as she was caught for 22 trying to power another shot over cover but could just not get the elevation. Naomi Stalenberg took off where Priest had finished and along with Haynes were motoring the Thunder towards their target.

Haynes was the only player in the game to pass the fifty mark and she did so in just 40 balls. Haynes tends to go under the radar with other big hitting batters around her. She was unbeaten on 68 at the end.

Harmanpreet Kaur was bowled by Knight as the Hurricanes found some resolve to slow down the scoring rate. Alex Blackwell was not around for too long but when she was out for 5 the equation for a Thunder win was beyond doubt.
