New Update
Charlotte Edwards.
Also, in the MCC team were ICC World Cup winners Sarah Taylor and Georgia Elwiss. It was always set up to be a competitive match. Middlesex, T-20 county runners-up last year and contained many of that same side.
Middlesex included their own World Cup winners in Fran Wilson and Beth Morgan who was part of the 2009 winning side that was captained by today’s opposing team skipper.
Natasha Miles, the Middlesex captain won the toss and chose to bowl. There was an audience of over 5000 which is a modern-day record for a domestic women’s game in England, however, there were 15000 at a game between Yorkshire and Lancashire in 1949.
MCC got off to the perfect start as openers Alex Rogers and Elysa Hubbard put on a partnership of 113 for the first wicket. Rogers who top-scored on the day was the player to fall when the off-spinner Bhavika Gajipra bowled a full-length ball that Rogers met on the full ball that she could only guide to Maia Bouchier in the outfield.
Roger’s opening partner was run out for 39 with two overs left to go. Sarah Taylor playing in her first game since the Ashes last year scored 18 not out from just 7 balls. The MCC finished on 145 for 3.
There is something about Lord’s that can affect players, that didn’t seem to affect the Middlesex side. They reached the total with just one ball to spare.
Miles and Naomi Dattani opened the batting for Middlesex. As the powerplay came to an end, Dattani was bowled for 18. Wilson was next to go also bowled this time by Emily Windsor the Hampshire player while only making 13.
Middlesex was going at six an over and needed to up the run-rate to nine an over. With Miles at the crease that seemed possible before she was dismissed by Elwiss for 38.
Bouchier with 39 not out from 27 balls really rose to the occasion. Eight runs were needed from the final over. Hayleigh Brennan playing in her first game for Middlesex as their overseas player since joining from Victoria was able to guide the Middlesex home.
This is a big occasion for domestic women’s cricket in England and hopefully, this won’t be the last time that Middlesex gets to play at Lord’s in the near future.
Middlesex 146 for 4 (Bouchier 39*, Windsor 1/18) beat MCC 145 for 3 (Rogers 72, Brennan 1/33)
