A good crowd for the first game at Harrup Park, Mackay saw a great example of the ebbs and flows that can happen even in the shortest form of the game. Brisbane Heat who have chased so well put in the sort of batting performance that has been expected of them this season winning by five wickets with 11 balls to spare.
On a good looking pitch with an outfield that was slow in places, the Melbourne Stars showed little hesitation in batting first.It was an important game for the Heat; having taken the game out of the city it was imperative that they put on a good display.
The Stars came into the game having lost from the last ball of their last game and were keen to put a defendable total on the scoreboard. Lizelle Lee and Katie Mack looked to get the Stars off to a solid start.
Lee who is a stand and delivers sort of batter had almost seen the powerplay out with the score on 32 prodded at a ball that was just outside of off stump and nicked it to Beth Mooney behind the stumps.
Katie Mack who top scored in the stars previous game was again the batter in form as she has turned some solid starts into runs. It was Mack’s third T20 fifty and first in the WBBL.
It was a busy innings with just 4 fours. It helped Mack that Mignon du Preez is also a busy player and the two of them ran well between the stumps to give the Stars the sort of base that they required.
However just when they needed them to kick on they both fell within an over of each over. Erin Osborne and Anna Lanning helped the Stars to a total of 133 for 3.
It didn’t seem to be enough, especially when Beth Mooney and Kirby Short went about the target with relish. In the sixth over they were on 49 when Short trying to clear the tall Annabel Sutherland who took it over her head.
Deandra Dottin the incoming batter found it unusually difficult to get going. And after 10 balls were still only on 2 when she looked to sweep Alana King and misjudged the flight and dip and was trapped lbw in front.
Mooney continued her fine form with a fifty that broke the back of any resistance from the Stars bowlers.
King was bowling well and saw off the in-form batter Mooney again with some clever bowling teased the batter with a wide ball that spun back and left Nicole Faltum with a relatively simple stumping.
The wicket of Mooney started to slow the scoring and the Stars were back in the game as Kristen Beams and King took the pace off the ball.
The Stars, however, weren’t able to stop Delissa Kimmince, Jess Jonassen and Laura Harris scoring a six each. It was able to put the Heat in control after the Stars had done so well to reel them back in.
It was a result that moved the Heat second in the table level on points with Sydney Thunder but having played a game more.
