Ireland beat PNG by 27 runs to book a spot at the World T20. They will face the winner of Bangladesh and Scotland on Saturday in the Qualifier finals. Meanwhile, PNG will face the loser of the above-mentioned game for the 3rd place, the same day. A brilliant overall performance by the Irish team and they certainly deserve the limelight today.
8 runs off the 19th over and Ireland will have to wait till the 20th over to claim their spot at the World T20!
Lucy O'Reilly takes her first wicket of the day of Ravini Oa. Kim Garth takes the catch. And next ball takes the wicket of Veru Frank. This time a stumping by Mary Waldron for duck.
Richardson takes her 2nd wicket of the day, a catch to Isobel Joyce of I Toua. Finishes with figures of 2/22 from her 4 overs.
3 runs and 2 wickets of that over from Laura Delany. Ireland now just inches away from a World T20 spot.
9 runs of the 15th over by PNG. 51 needed off the last 5.
7 runs coming off the 14th over. 6 overs left and 60 runs needed.
Brenda Tau couldn't take her team any further and falls after a slow inning of 22 off 39 balls. Metcalfe with her first for the day.
Tanya Ruma is run out for just 10. And the required run rate has risen above 9.
3 runs from that over by Kim Garth.
At the halfway stage and Ireland look all set for another win. A miracle could only bring PNG's chances. They haven't lost many wickets but the run rate has piled to over 8.
7 runs coming of that over which includes a four by Tau.
Another cheap over from Ireland, this time by skipper Delany conceding just 1. The required run rate has risen to over 7 and a half.
Just 3 coming from that over by Metcalfe. PNG 21/2
The powerplay comes to an end and we haven't witnessed any power hitting from PNG. Ireland bowlers have been fairly on target. Tanya Ruma and Brenda Tau doing the rescue work.
2 runs coming off the 5 over. If not the wickets, the pressure of the runs getting piled and the rise in the strike rate is going to affect the PNG batters. They need to certainly up their ante. Run rate has crossed 6 now.
Impressive! That's the world Ireland is bringing to my mind. Not allowing PNG batters to settle down. 5 runs coming of that over from Richardson and there is a bowling change. Ciara Metcalfe, the destructor in the previous game comes to bowl.
Another wicket for Ireland! Both the PNG openers back in the hut. This time it's Isobel Joyce who removes Jimmy with a catch to Kim Garth at mid-wicket. They are eyeing one thing, a place in the World T20.
A good start for Ireland! John steps out of the crease to hit the delivery, misses and Waldron does the rest. First of PNG in the pavilion. Tau joins Jimmy to the crease.
3 runs of the first over. John and Jimmy have started for PNG while Isobel Joyce starts it for Ireland.
Even innings for both the sides. Both Ireland and PNG did well in bits and pieces. Ireland will definitely think that they are short of a total they would have wished for while PNG would find it difficult to chase considering Ireland's brilliant bowling. Don't forget the top 3 of PNG (Jimmy, John and Tau) are in form.
PNG need 114 runs to win from 120 balls.
Join us back for a brilliant chase.
PNG are restricting Ireland well. Just 7 runs in the penultimate over of the innings and Ireland are 104/6.
Just 2 runs coming of that over and Garth who was trying to steal a single is run out by Ravini Oa at the bowler's end. A direct throw doing the trick.
Garth and Delany now doing the rescue work at a good pace for Ireland. 11 runs coming of that over from Frank and Ireland building for a good finish. Three overs to go!
Araa and Arua are making a good bowler-fielder combination. Another shot by an Irish batter, this time Richardson and another catch at mid-on region by Arua. Araa now has figures of 2/8 in 2 overs. This could be game-changing.
Good comeback by PNG in the last 5 overs where they have only conceded 22 runs and taken 2 crucial wickets. The game is wide open and PNG doing all in their powers to restrict Ireland to a low total.
Isobel Joyce doesn't have a good day with the bat. Goes for 6 to Vicky Araa. A sharp catch at mid-on for Arua. And just 2 runs of that over.
Just 5 runs coming of that over. Kaia Arua finishes her four over for the figures of 1/23. PNG fighting hard.
Delany hits the ball back to the bowler where Jimmy was quick to dislodge the bails. Lewis who was out of the crease falls after scoring 36 off 33.
7 runs coming off that over with a four to square leg boundary by Gaby Lewis.
We're at the halfway mark in the Irish innings. Ireland have started to pick up the pace and if things continue the same way, they are in to post a big total. PNG, on the other hand, need to continue picking wickets and not allow Ireland to settle with partnerships.
Kaia Arua strikers with a ball slightly faster than the previous one and keeping low. Cleans up the stumps of Cecelia Joyce. She goes for 18(25). Skipper Laura Delany joins Lewis.
A tidy over by Sibona Jimmy giving just 4 runs. PNG needs to continue the same and start taking wickets to be in the game.
Another good over for Ireland with both the openers seemed to have changed the gears. Kaia Arua hit for 11 in her first with 2 fours, one by each of Lewis and Joyce.
A brilliant end to the powerplay by Ireland with 8 coming off the sixth over. Ireland certainly picking up now. PNG has to now try and break this partnership which is now 32 runs.
A good over from Ireland's perspective. 10 coming of that over from Mairi Tom and includes two back to back fours by Gaby Lewis, one to mid-off and the other to the midwicket fence.
Just 2 runs coming off the fourth over. Certainly, PNG are bowling their guns out today. A win takes them to the Caribbean. Ravina Oa has only conceded 3 from her 2 overs.
6 runs coming of the 3rd over with a four of the first ball by Cecelia Joyce. PNG needs to plan for some more wickets now.
Ravini Oa bowls a brilliant second over. Just 1 coming off it. PNG wouldn't have asked for a better start to this.
Not a good start for Ireland as the in-form Shillington gets dismissed for a duck off the second ball to Mairi Tom. PNG are a happy team. Gaby Lewis joins Cecelia Joyce to the crease.
Papua New Guinea XI: Jimmy, John, Tau (wk), Ruma, Arua (c), Frank, Vare, Toua, Oa, Araa, Tom.
For Ireland, it has been a simple formula. Win toss, field first, restrict the opposition to a low score. Shillington leads the chase and Ireland win. However, things will be different today as Ireland will have to bat first after losing the toss against a spirited PNG side.
For PNG, things didn't start well for them as they lost their opening encounter to favourites Bangladesh. However, back to back wins over UAE and hosts Netherlands have opened their doors of a worthy semi-final clash against Ireland.
PNG has won the toss and decided to field first. Laura Delany finally loses her first toss of the competition.
