Day 2: ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Region Qualifier 2019

Day Two of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Region Qualifier 2019 continued on 7th May at Port Vila in Vanuatu.

Four fixtures were played on Day One in which Papua New Guinea played 2 consecutive games and won both of them. Four more fixtures were played on Day Two involving Japan, Samoa, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the host Vanuatu.

Match 5

Japan met Samoa in the first session at Ground 1 to kickstart the proceedings on Day Two.

Samoa won the toss and elected to field first. Japan lost the first wicket quickly but a 37-run partnership for the second wicket showed glimpses of a decent score. Kitayama batted superbly for her 63 runs in 54 deliveries which had 8 boundaries. Apart from that no other batter could even cross 15 run mark. Japan were all out for 119 in 20 overs. Continuing her fine performance from the previous day, Mulivai took 4 wickets for Samoa.

In reply, Samoa batters started very aggressively as the skipper Lili'i and Bourne put up a 96 run stand for the first wicket in just 13 overs. Bourne played a quick fire knock of 47 in 38 deliveries but was out just 3 runs shy of a fine half century. Lili'i remained unbeaten on 47 and Mulivai finished the match with quick 10 runs. Samoa chased the target in just 15.4 overs.

Despite being on a losing side Kitayama was declared player of the match as Samoa posted an emphatic 9-wicket win.

Match 6

Fiji versus Papua New Guinea was played in the first session on Ground 2.

Fiji won the toss and elected to bat first. Fiji suffered an incredible collapse and were all out for just 23 runs in 11.1 overs. Ravina Oa bowled an incredible spell in which she took 4 wickets for just 4 runs. No Fiji batter could even cross 5 run mark.

It took Papua New Guinea just 19 deliveries to reach the target and post a huge 10 wicket victory without even breaking much sweat.

Ravina Oa was declared player of the match in this one sided affair.

Match 7

Weather played a massive role in the fixture between Indonesia and Samoa which took place in the second session at Ground 1.

In the truncated match of 13 overs, Samoa won the toss and elected to field first.

Indonesia started confidently by scoring 37 runs in 8 overs but a collapse in the batting line up meant they could only add 18 runs in next 5 overs. Anggraeni was the top scorer for Indonesia with 26 runs. Iosefo took 2 wickets for Samoa. Indonesia posted a total of 55-6 in their 13 overs.

D/L system set the revised target of 64 runs in 13 overs to Samoa. Skipper Lili'i stayed unbeaten for the third consecutive match and scored 28 runs and posted a 49-run partnership with Pula to register a 9-wicket victory. Samoa chased the target with 2 overs to spare for the loss of one wicket.

Match 8

Even the match between the hosts Vanuatu and Fiji was reduced to 13 overs per side.

Fiji won the toss and elected to field.

The opener Langiatu started smashing Fiji bowlers all over the park from the word go. She got out when the team's score was 74 out of which her contribution was a smashing 50 off 27 deliveries with 8 boundaries. Solman and Tastuki continued the onslaught and added 47 runs in just 26 deliveries. At the end of 13 overs, Vanuatu posted a huge total of 121-3.

D/L system made the task difficult for Fiji by setting them a steep target of 139 runs from 13 overs. Fiji batting line up could not sustain the pressure of such a high asking run rate and managed to post just 75 runs in their 13 overs. Lomani was the highest scorer for Fiji with 27 runs, followed by Vua with 10 runs.

Langiatu was awarded player of the match as the hosts Vanuatu closed the second day's play with a 63 runs victory.
