Cricket Wellington Board members among Women in Governance Award finalists

Press Release

Two of Cricket Wellington’s board members have been named as finalists for the 2019 Women in Governance Awards.

Cricket Wellington chair Sally Morrison and director Sally McKechnie have both been named as finalists in three award categories – McKechnie for Emerging Governance Leader Award and Morrison for the Not-For-Profit Governance Leader Award and the Inspiring Governance Leader Supreme Award.

The Women in Governance Awards are an initiative of Women on Boards New Zealand which is a business unit of Governance New Zealand.

The Awards programme recognises and celebrates innovation, excellence, creativity and commitment to diversity by both organisations and individuals.

Morrison has had a significant impact on gender equality within cricket in Wellington and across New Zealand since she became the first ever female to be elected as chair of a cricket association in 2016.

Morrison has created a culture of inclusion within Cricket Wellington that has attracted more women to cricket and has significantly increased the breadth and capability of the board, which has now become the only major association board in New Zealand with a majority of women serving.

McKechnie’s commitment to gender diversity has also been significant and was highlighted by championing the ‘Govern like a girl’ breakfast panel which aimed to bring together female governors and leaders from across Wellington to network.

Both finalists have also made significant contributions to organisations outside of cricket – Morrison as chair of Wellington Hockey and McKechnie as a trustee of the Life Flight Trust.

McKechnie said she hoped the awards would help to assist New Zealand in addressing its gender-governance gap.

“I’m delighted to be recognised at such an early stage of my governance career,” she said.

“We have made some really significant steps at Cricket Wellington around gender diversity and we want to continue to make significant changes so that there are equal opportunities for women not just in cricket but also in governance.”

Governance New Zealand, the leading independent professional body with a focus on the practice of governance in New Zealand, wholeheartedly supports Women on Board’s vision of “gender equality in governance" and their mission to inspire, educate, connect and support all women in their governance journey”.

The award winners will be announced at a special Awards Gala Dinner to be held at the Hilton Auckland on June 20.
