Auckland Hearts, last season's runners up in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, have announced an experienced 12-member squad for their opening two matches against Wellington Blaze at the Basin Reserve on Saturday (November 16) and Sunday (November 17).

Auckland's leadership group looks to have changed entirely from the 2018-19 season with Nick White taking over as head coach and Anna Peterson named captain. Brad Cachopa, the former Auckland wicket-keeper, will serve as the squad's assistant coach.

These changes aside, Auckland have a strong core group of players to choose from including four international - Lauren Down, Holly Huddleston, Katie Perkins and Peterson. Maddy Green, part of their squad last year, has shifted over to the opposition camp. However, the right-hander will be unavailable for the first round of matches owing to her Women's Big Bash League commitments with Brisbane Heat.

“The entire group have worked extremely hard through the winter and pre-season; you can certainly sense the energy around the squad," White said. “It’s great to be able to start the season at the Basin, a quality place to play and a venue that offers up unique challenges. The Blaze (Wellington) will also provide an excellent test of where we are as a side.”

Peterson will be taking charge of the Hearts squad for the first time, and the right-arm off-spinner is eager to get things going with a win under her belt.

“We know the Blaze have a dangerous spin attack and a long batting line-up, so we will need to play smart cricket. “We are looking forward to seeing players express themselves and embrace the challenges that the Basin can bring,” she concluded.

Squad: Anna Peterson (c), Bella Armstrong, Lauren Down, Holly Huddleston, Arlene Kelly, Tariel Lamb, Regina Lilii, Roz McNeill, Katie Perkins, Jesse Prasad, Saachi Shahri, Natasha van Tilburg.
