New Update
It’s hard to keep cerebral minds and determined athletes out of the reckoning, even after they’ve retired from a sport. There was an air of disappointment early on this year especially in the Australian camp when solid right-hander Alex Blackwell announced her retirement from the game.

Now, former Australian cricketer who retired from international cricket in 2018 will be donning a new role. The right-handed batswoman will be appearing as the coach for the Kia Super League club Lancashire Thunder as the new season kicks off in the coming days.

A hard-hitting dependable batswoman with as many as 144 ODI games under her belt, Blackwell was noted for being a crucial lynchpin in stitching partnerships. Perhaps now, she’d be expected to guide youngsters in how to go about saving their wickets whilst continuing batting onslaughts in her new role as the coach for Lancashire Thunder in Women's T20 super league.

But that said, take nothing away from Blackwell’s game that also boasts of a great familiarity with cricket’s briefest format. For Australian national duties, Alex Blackwell turned up for as many as 95 T20s continuing to pile up runs till her last appearance in 2016.

While the prospect of not seeing Blackwell don the Australian gold in this year’s World T20 will bring up sombre faces, there’s reason to rejoice as the New South Wales cricketer has continued her association with the game. Even as that means contributing from behind the stage. She’s also previously turned up for the inaugural edition of the Kia Super League back in 2016 when she turned up as batswoman for the Yorkshire Diamonds.

For any noted cricketer, both the prospect of being involved with the youth is a promising experience, ahead of being a learning curve in itself. Then for someone who’s played international cricket for 15 years, it’s something to ride home about. Speaking on the occasion of her appointment as Yorkshire Diamonds’ coach, “I am excited to work with local up and coming cricketers, in addition to some of the world’s best, as coach of Lancashire Thunder in the Kia Super League this year,” Blackwell told Cricket Australia.
